Changes to penalty rates begin July 1

Media reports on changes to penalty rates have been widespread but what does it mean for you?

Below is a quick overview.

Changes to penalty rates apply to casual employees and some permanent employees. They affect pay rates for working on Sundays, public holidays, evenings or after midnight.

The changes affect 5 Awards:

– General Retail

– Fast Food

– Restaurant

– Pharmacy

– Hospitality

The Registered and Licensed Clubs Award 2010 is currently being reviewed. A decision on any changes is expected within the next few months.

The changes begin on 1 July 2017 however, the Fair Work Commission has not yet determined how the changes to Sunday penalty rates will be implemented.

Changes to evening and after midnight pay rates for the Fast Food and Restaurant Awards will also begin on 1 July 2017.
